Mrs. Sperling’s ninth-grade, World History classes were monks and nuns for the day. Once they entered the classroom the students were to be silent for the entire period. They rotated from station to station doing different tasks that monks and nuns do daily. Some of the stations included sewing, praying, cleaning, and even sleeping.
Ms. Sylvia Black's Spanish Class
Spanish isn’t just about speaking the language. Ms. Sylvia Black, who was named this year's Glenn-Howell Distinguished Minority Educator, teaches that in her Spanish classes. On this day, students spent their day making chorizo mexicano (Mexican sausage) with tortillas while listening to Mexican-themed music. The class enjoyed being able to learn and eat at the same time! Who wouldn't?
Honor Roll Ice Cream Social
Students who make honor roll get out of class early a few times each year to enjoy some ice cream and prizes. This year at our fall ice cream social, we had 1,323 students who made the grades. X101.5FM came out to play music and a Sierra Mist truck arrived loaded with drinks. Students’ names were drawn and prizes were awarded including an iPod, cards for iTunes, and gift cards.

Horticulture
Horticulture students, with direction by teacher Mr. Jim West, have completed three landscape projects on campus. First, they pruned nearly 60 crape myrtle trees along the front of the school, in the faculty parking lot, and along the walkway to the baseball complex.
In September, they planted the first of two gardens in front of the main office. Filled with yellow and gold blooming flowers, the plants have been a nice addition to the new plaza. The second garden is in front of the school and includes pink pentas, yellow milkweed, blue plumbago and yellow wedelia. Next on their agenda is to add plants to the space under the staircases in the courtyard.
Horticulture students also sold more than $1,200 worth of plants during their fall plant sale.
